Extract from Chapter 3 - The leader

All my 219 followers below met me like a prince, kneeling with their torches in front of their faces. What was going on? What exactly had they told the people? All the questions boiled down to nothing in a matter of seconds, and I was left completely lost for words. Out of nowhere, words came from nothing and out my mouth.
"You have joined me on my quest to go home. I will guide you to where you belong, whether it costs me my life or not. The desert is an obstacle we will come across, but I will," I stopped for half a moment to put all weight on the word 'will', "guide you to your faith, whether he chooses that you are to come with me to the land beyond or not." I left a little moment to pray for Mejur to guide all of them through the desert, even though I didn't believe it for a moment. One of the women in front had a baby in one arm, and a six-seven year old sleeping on the other. How on earth were they going to come through? I shook the thought away and started walking down to Lerikat and Reri. Lerikat's mood had totally changed. He wrapped an arm around my shoulders, and Reri around my waist. We walked through the crowd and noticed how they slowly started moving after us as we approached the end of the crowd. On the way I noticed random finger touches from people - my shoulders were especially popular.
"Good gods, you're cold. Reri, give him the mudo(*) blanket from the bag." Lerikat gestured to a bag hanging over the back of his horse, which Reri was leading now.
"Mudo blanket?"
"It's made from mudo flower fiber," precised Lerikat.
"Oh. I guess you mean this, then." She found a long, white piece of cloth and they wrapped it around my shoulders when Lerikat nodded.
"Thank you," I said, not realizing before then how cold I actually was."
"Isn't it great that we're going even further south? We're going to freeze to death before spring!" grinned Reri. I froze for a moment; I would be the one who was going to get them through it. But I shook it off. It was too far into the future for me to worry about at that time. In time it would turn out that we knew nothing about what was to come. We all had a vague - or in sometimes very fantasy filled image of what was waiting beyond the desert. In the days to come, I heard several children tell me about the honey lakes and mehiso - very rare Azixian candy - hills. According to them, that was what the gods ate, and wondered if they would be allowed to taste some.
"Why do they keep asking me?" I asked Egi, a girl my age who had her first child right after leaving Meyrine.
Egi smiled. "You can talk to the gods. Their parents tell their children that, and they take it for granted that you know everything."
It was rather awkward that she would say that. I hadn't heard a word from the gods since we left, and that was almost two weeks into our journey moving north along the mountain boarder to Tidanar.
(*) Mudo is a lilly type flower of several uses in the Setoan(**) culture: the flower itself is used in the same way as an engagement ring is used in the "western" culture, the nectar is commonly used to add sweetness to food, and the fibers are strong, and thus it is used for rope and bags, and was before the technology to make silk and linen was bettered in the 1400s (year 2010 = 1519 in the Setoan calendar), it was also used for clothing.

(**) Seto: The continent in which my stories pretty exclusively takes place. It consists of (from East to West) Goldenia, Azixiz, Tidanar and Isai (at this time nameless, if mentioned, it's called 'the new land' 'the land beyond' 'southern Tidanar', 'the land of the gods' etc.
